The Problem with Antibiotics
Overuse of prescription antibiotics for upper respiratory infections, sore throats, and bronchitis is an ongoing concern in the healthcare community, despite the warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declaring antibiotic resistance as a serious health threat.
Researchers are calling for a further intervention to stop unnecessary use of antibiotics, particularly for patients with acute bronchitis or sore throats, who are not likely to benefit from taking them.
Many healthcare practitioners – perhaps yourself – report feeling frustrated when it comes to treating patients whose infection is not bacterial in nature. They feel pressured to prescribe medication as most patients are not willing to let their bodies fight the infection and recover through natural means. They want to feel better faster.
A recent JAMA study reported that, while only 10 percent of adults with a sore throat actually have a strep (bacterial) infection that would require antibiotics, doctors prescribed antibiotics in 60 percent of sore throat cases overall. The report also stated that unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions for adults with sore throats cost the United States more than $500 million from 1997-2010. This estimate did not include the expense associated with side effects from antibiotic use.
Interestingly, a recent study from the CDC found that the most frequently prescribed antibiotic was azithromycin, or Z-Pak, commonly used for bronchitis symptoms. This poses a problem. Acute bronchitis, a swelling and inflammation of the main air passages in lungs, is most often caused by a virus. According to research, antibiotics – like azithromycin – should almost never be prescribed for this condition because they do not work against viruses.1
Despite this fact, patients that present with this condition
are prescribed antibiotics 73 percent of the time. Why?
Patient demand. Patients have come to expect and demand a one pill solution for whatever ails them. They ask for antibiotics because they assume they will make them feel better and faster than the age-old advice to rest and take care of the body.
What if there was a way to both appease the desire for a prescription and facilitate faster and natural healing? What if this method also provided a means to boost immunity on an ongoing basis after the illness was gone?
Enzymes: A Doctor’s Natural Defense Against Infection
Systemic enzymes serve many functions throughout the body. In terms of immune support, they neutralize viruses by dissolving their protein-rich outer covering which then prevents the virus from attaching to healthy tissues and replicating. Systemic enzymes may be useful not only when a patient first develops viral symptoms but as a preventative measure as well, ensuring that the immune system is fully equipped to handle pathogenic invasion. Enzymes also support healthy gastrointestinal permeability so to reduce the introduction of pathogens into the bloodstream.
A virus is difficult to overcome because these organisms can survive antibiotics, vaccines, and even some natural herbal remedies. This causative agent for a variety of infectious diseases can grow and reproduce inside of the body, dangerously affecting the health of children and adults.2 Enzymes prevent the serious illnesses associated with viruses from occurring, which decreases the chance of exposure significantly. In addition to neutralizing viruses, systemic enzymes reduce pain and symptomology associated with chronic inflammation, regulate the immune system, remove excess fibrous tissue, and restore blood flow and volume.

Systemic enzyme therapy provides an opportunity to boost the immune system while avoiding the damage done to healthy gut flora when antibiotics are taken – a true “win-win” strategy.
How Do Enzymes Combat Viruses?
Exactly how do enzymes fight viruses and improve the immune system? Enzymes are composed of numerous proteins of living cells which naturally catalyze specific biochemical reactions in the body. They send a chemical reaction through the body to boost the body’s natural processes such as sustaining digestion and improving the immune system. At World Nutrition, we offer two of the most important enzyme blends that deliver benefits to the body and sustain life: systemic enzymes and digestive enzymes. Both significantly improve the body’s functionality by triggering multiple metabolic processes throughout.
When we think of the immune system, the conversation almost always revolves around a low or decreased immune system. Certainly, addressing low enzyme levels in the body can improve a weakened immune system. Many times, patients are experiencing the opposite – a hyper-immune response that the body seems to have difficulty in turning off. Systemic enzymes restore balance by its ability to both up-regulate and down-regulate the immune response. A balanced and well-functioning immune system ensures protection from viable pathogens while protecting healthy tissues from auto-immune antibodies. Patients who suffer from pain as part of an auto-immune response may experience relief that other treatments have failed to address.
The proteolytic activity of systemic enzymes may also provide protection against virus proliferation through their ability to neutralize the defense shield of the virus, thereby preventing the virus from attaching to healthy DNA. Systemic enzymes are non-toxic and without side-effects, making them a great alternative to traditional pain medications.
Additional Benefits of Enzymes
Defending the body from viruses and promoting a healthy immune system is but one role that enzymes play. Enzymes are also responsible for boosting your body’s natural metabolic processes. There are numerous benefits experienced when incorporating superior enzyme supplements such as Vitälzӯm™ Xe.
