Enzyme supplements on the market today come in many different forms such as gel capsules, tablets, and powder-filled capsules. World Nutrition’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility produces the only enteric-coated enzyme supplement in a liquid gel capsule format. Our enteric-coated Vitälzӯm® Extra Strength and Vitälzӯm® Xe liquid gel capsules provide the best and most effective oral delivery system in the enzyme market because of their ability to distribute the highest quantity of active enzymes. At the heart of this advanced delivery system is the liquid gel capsule, which further enhances enzyme absorption in the small intestine. The enteric coating protects the enzymes from the acidic environment of the stomach as the capsule passes through unharmed until it reaches the small intestine. Limitations of Enteric-Coated tablets and Powder Filled Capsules
Enteric-coated tablets are also able to withstand stomach acids. However, they must be introduced into a high pH environment for extended periods of time before dissolving. As individual pH levels vary, the tablet may dissolve very late in the small intestine or bypass it completely and survive its journey through the small intestine intact. This may result in very few, if any, of the enzymes being absorbed into the bloodstream, especially if the tablet is of poor quality and contains binders and fillers. Many people may also experience discomfort using supplements with a synthetic coating found in most other brands.
Powder-filled capsule technology is suitable for hybrid enzyme supplements that also offer digestive support*, such as World Nutrition’s Vitälzȳm® Original Hybrid formula. For those seeking enzyme supplements strictly for systemic support, capsules without an enteric coating fall short because the capsule will break down in the stomach and the enzymes will be prematurely released. The highly acidic environment of the stomach will destroy some of those enzymes before they can reach the small intestine, reducing the overall amount of enzymes absorbed into the bloodstream.
Advantages of Vitalzym & Vitalzym Xe Enteric-Coated Liquid-Filled Gel Capsules
The all-natural protective enteric coating allows the Vitälzȳm® enzymes to pass through the harsh acidic environment of the stomach unharmed. The capsule then enters the small intestine for assimilation and absorption into the bloodstream. The combination of enteric coating protection and the liquid gel capsule format allows for nearly 100% of enzyme activity to enter the body.
Liquid systemic enzyme formulas also provide a more consistent delivery of enzyme activity. The blending of liquids allows for optimal particle distribution. In powder formulations, each enzyme has a unique particle size and weight causing greater friction between particles during mixing. Excipients are introduced to powder formulations to increase the ‘mixability,’ but liquids still provide superior distribution consistency in each capsule. As a result, consumers may absorb maximum enzyme quantity in doses as low as three capsules, twice per day, compared to doses as high as 30 or 40 powder-filled capsules.
Liquid blends ensure that maximum enzyme activity level is maintained during the manufacturing process. Enzymes are susceptible to high temperatures and may begin to degrade and lose activity when exposed to extreme temperatures. Many tablet-based enzyme formulations are manufactured on presses that run at temperatures which often exceed 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Research has shown that when enzymes are exposed to temperatures in those ranges, their activity levels can begin to fall, thus weakening the formula before the product is even bottled. Our renowned Vitälzȳm® and VitälzȳmXe® liquid gel capsule systemic enzymes are produced under strictly controlled temperatures. The solubilized enteric-coated liquid-filled gel capsules allow for the enzymes to safely pass through the small intestine and into the bloodstream without losing activity due to high temperatures.
If enzymes sit long enough, their activity level eventually begins to weaken and the benefits they provide will diminish. The majority of enzymes that come in powder or tablet form – like those of most of our competitors – have a shelf life of 12 to 18 months. Our Vitälzӯm® liquid gel capsules, however, aren’t so quickly compromised. They have been tested to consistently retain their activity levels for a full five years. Our product is stamped with a three-year shelf life, more than double the industry average. The chart below shows the activity level analyzed in one lot of our Vitälzӯm® product over an 18-month period. Many powder-filled and tablet enzymes will lose up to 20 percent of their activity during this timeframe. In contrast, the enzymes in Vitälzӯm® maintained nearly the exact same amount of activity in month 18 that they had when they were first bottled.
